Sam Attanasio, Club Speed World Record, and GÜS Golf

If you haven’t heard, Sam Attanasio broke the world record for club speed at 172.5 mph becoming the first person to ever swing a golf club over 170 mph (previous record was 169.7). He did it in a GÜS glove. How did we get there? 

Dr. Sam Attanasio is the world record holder for both clubhead speed and ball speed. Sam’s swing speed is nothing short of legendary. With this amount of power and speed Sam’s gloves take an absolute beating. That’s where we come in. 

Sam first reached out to me on Instagram when he commented on our reel of perhaps the ugliest grip and glove you’ll ever see.

My first thought was who is this dude trying to give me advice on my glove? After a quick stalking, I realized “this dude” is the world record holder for clubhead speed, the world record holder for ball speed, the co-founder of Speed Toad, a Doctor of multiple fancy medical things, and a professional World Long Drive competitor. The list doesn’t end there but you get the point. 

I immediately reached out and requested to talk about our project. Within a couple of days we had hopped on a video chat and we quickly connected on our brand values. Being a veteran owned, family run, Christian based company, Sam generously began offering his time and knowledge to help us build a truly revolutionary glove and grip that he would want to use. I asked him the most important question for our brand:

“What would an ideal golf glove look like for you?”

Here was Sam's idea for his ideal golf glove designed to withstand his extreme swing speed: 

1. Durability/Price Point:

Dr. Sam Attanasio went through tons of gloves as you can imagine. The glove either needed to be incredibly durable or cheap enough to buy a ton. It couldn’t be so thick that you can’t feel the club, either. At the time Sam used only Cabretta leather gloves and they were destroyed in 2-3 swing speed sessions. Sometimes holes appeared in just ONE swing speed session. 

2. All Weather Conditions 

World Long Drive competitions aren’t canceled just for rain! These gloves needed to outperform Cabretta Leather in the rain and not force the golfer to use ridiculous amounts of chalk or grip spray. What every Long Driver wants to avoid is having to put a death grip on the club, throwing off their entire swing.

3. Glove Sweat Retention

Finally, it needed to retain as little sweat as possible. If you’ve seen any videos of Sam Attanasio from his Instagram you know how tall of task that was.  

Nowadays you’ll see Sam Attanasio competing at World Long Drive competitions wearing a GÜS Golf glove and polo.

He’s been using our microfiber glove for several months now. Check out some photos below comparing a leading competitor Cabretta Leather golf glove and our microfiber glove. 

Incredibly, Sam has been using one GÜS Golf glove for an entire month of intense training without a single hole appearing. Sam himself told me this is completely unheard of for him. Sam elected to try our microfiber glove instead of the polyurethane due to its greater tear resistance and the fact that it paired well with his grips. 

Some downsides of the microfiber that I noticed are that it’s not quite as tacky as a leather glove. It does start to pill which negatively affects the golfer’s feel and connection with the glove. Of course the glove is a work in progress. Despite these downsides, we are absolutely stoked about how well it has performed for the fastest golfer in the world. 

We also developed a polyurethane glove that offers more tackiness and is thinner than the microfiber, providing a better feel for the club. Both are available on our website!
